Free Family Fishing Event
Do we need to pre-register?
NO, there is no pre-registration required. You will be asked to register on arrival.
Where do we park?
On arrival you will be directed to parking spots in the area of the Aquatics Lodge where check-in will be held. All events will be held near the lake.
What time is the event?
The Fishing event starts at 10:00 am and will conclude at 2:00 pm.
Do we have to arrive at 10:00 am and stay for the whole day?
No, registration and activities begin at 10:00 am and to give all participants time to visit each instructional station and have time to fish, participants should try to arrive and register by noon. When you have had enough fishing and fun you may leave. Don’t forget to visit the Trading Post.
What is the cost to participate?
This is a free event for youth. Adults should accompany their children (no fee) and plan to participate with them. Lunch will be available to purchase.
How much does lunch cost?
Meal Deal - Hamburger or hot dog, chips, cookies & beverage are available for $5.00
Al a carte prices: hot dog or hamburger $3.00; cheese $1.00 extra
Can we bring our own lunch?
You are welcome to bring your own picnic lunch.
Do we have to attend as a Pack or Troop?
This is a family event and you do not need to attend with your Scout unit. Youth should attend with a parent/guardian. You do not need to be a Scout to attend and participate.
Can we invite friends and potential Scouts to attend?
YES, this event is open to potential new members. Scouts - Please invite non-Scout youth and their parent/guardian to attend with you. They will be able to join Scouting that day if they wish.
Can every youth join Scouting?
Scouting programs are available for boys starting in kindergarten and for girls staring in 6th grade.
Cub Scout Packs: Boys kindergarten through grade 5.
Boy Scout Troops: Boys who are 11 yrs old/completed Grade 5 to age 18.
Middle School Explorer Clubs: School-based Clubs for boys and girls starting in grade 6. Speak to a District Executive about Explorer Clubs in your town.
Venture Crews: Boys & Girls who have completed grade 8 or are ages 14 – 21.
Explorer Posts: Career exploration for Boys and Girls who have completed 8th grade or are ages 14 – 21. Speak to a District Executive to find a Post near you.
Do I have to bring my own fishing gear?
No, fishing gear with be available to use during this event. Mass WildLife is supplying fishing gear. Bait will be provided.
Do we need to have a fishing license to participate?
No, because this is an instructional event held in conjunction with Mass WildLife, no one will need a fishing license to participate.
Should my child bring the worms and lures he received when he attended a recent Scout Sign-up event?
Yes, he can bring his new lures if he would like to do that. Youth who join Scouting at the event will also receive a bag of the lures.
What instruction will be offered?
Youth will be taught about tackle and bait, how to rig a fishing rod, how to cast and reel in a fish. Those interested in fly fishing can learn to tie a fly and how to cast.
Each participant will be taught to cast using a button spin rod, will have a chance to practice and will have time to fish. Our hope is that every child can catch a fish.
Who are the instructors?
Certified Angler Instructors will be available at each station to provide instruction and assistance to participants. Many of these CAI fishermen are members of the Western Massachusetts Council Fishing Committee and offer fishing instruction and events throughout the year to our Scouts.
Fly Fishing expert Bob Sousa will teach fly fishing, including instruction in how to tie a fly if time permits.
MassWildlife Angler Education Program Coordinator, Jim Legacy will provide instruction and materials that help to make this event possible.
Will the Trading Post be open?
The Camp Trading Post will be open 10:00 am to 2:00 pm
What is the rain date?
There is no rain date – this event will be held rain or shine. We can fish in the rain, although no one will be allowed to fish if there is lightening in the area. Scouts are prepared for weather events, but we always are weather aware and take precautions as warranted if severe weather comes in.
My family cannot attend the Hooked on Scouting Free Family Fishing event on June 10. Will there be other opportunities to fish this year?
The WMC Fishing committee holds fishing events throughout the year and will have a schedule of upcoming events posted on the Western Massachusetts Council website www.wmascouting.org
