Family Troops – Resources
Scouts BSA offers troop options: boy troops, girl troops, and family troops. Choosing a model should include your Chartered Organization, adult volunteers, parents, and Scouts.
Quick Links
Before You Decide
Use these questions to guide your unit discussion:
-
Does the Chartered Organization support this change?
-
Do Scouts, parents, and adult leaders want a family troop? Why?
-
Have both troops reached agreement (if merging)?
-
How will you meet all Barriers to Abuse / safeguarding requirements?
How to Convert
Converting one troop
Complete the Intent to Convert form and submit it to the council.
Merging two troops into one family troop
-
Complete the form indicating which troop becomes the family troop and which troop will close.
-
If both troops share the same chartered organization, your registrar may not need applications to move everyone.
-
If chartered organizations differ, adult applications may be needed per council procedure.
-
Ensure Safeguarding Youth Training is current for all adults.
If the Model Isn’t Working
A family troop can convert back into:
-
Two separate troops (boy + girl), or
-
A single troop (boy-only or girl-only)
Work with your district/council team and the registrar to follow the correct steps.
