2017 Yukon Challenge - Canceled

Unfortunately, there has not been enough interest for us to run this program.

Horace A. Moses Scout Reservation
February 19 - 25, 2017
Open to: Older Boy Scouts (age 13 by September 1, 2017) and Venturers

The Yukon Challenge is an exciting week-long experience that will help you develop skills that will allow you to enjoy camping year-round. While winter camping has obstacles that must be dealt with, once you learn how to overcome them, this time of year offers a wide-range of activities that are unique to the season. Join us for the Yukon Challenge and you will be well on your way to being able to fully enjoy this season as much, if not more, than the other three seasons.

This flyer summarizes the program for those who might be interested in attending this exciting week.

Camper's Guide

Here is the guide for those attending the Yukon Challenge.

2017 Yukon Challenge Guide

Ice Climbing

You may have ascended to the top of Pike's Peak (our 68' climbing tower) or done some climbing on rock faces, but climbing ice is another challenge altogether. We'll introduce you to the basics of using crampons and ice axes to ascend a wall of ice.

Dog Sledding

While dog sleds are most common in Alaska and northern Canada, there are people in our area who run dog sled teams each winter. You will have a chance to meet one of these teams and learn about what it takes to maintain a team of dogs and what tasks they can perform.

Shelter Building

Have you built a shelter for the Wilderness Survival merit badge? Well, this type of shelter building is a bit different. Learn the best techniques for constructing such a shelter and sleep in it during the week! You'll want to get it right so you can stay warm at night.

One of the coolest methods of getting around in the winter is using snowshoes. Perhaps you have used these or even own your own pair but if not, we'll show you how to make a pair and use them to trek through the wilds of the Moses Scout Reservation.

Ice Fishing

With 86 acres of lake, there will be plenty of ice on which to try out the fine art of ice fishing. Savvy ice fishermen know where to set up their lines to get the most hits. Learn the tricks to have a successful ice fishing experience.

Cross-Country Skiing

While downhill skiing and snowboarding are the most popular activities, cross-country skiing gives the skier mobility and access to areas not easily reached on foot. Join us as we trek through the reservation and learn the joys of using these skis.

Then plan to join us February 19 - 25, 2017 at the Moses Scout Reservation. This program is offered to individual Boy Scouts who are 13 by September 1, 2017 or any Venturer, so your unit does not need to attend. Click here to reserve a spot using Tentaroo by submitting a $50 deposit by December 1, 2016! The total fee is $370 if paid in full by January 15, 2017; $395 if paid after that date. Siblings receive a $25 discount (one Scout pays the early bird or full fee, siblings pay the reduced fee). Note: Attendance at the Yukon Challenge Week qualifies you for the Multiple Week Discount of $50 for any additional weeks of camp at the Moses Scout Reservation in 2017.
